| Citation | Distinguished for outstanding work in Plant Ecology. He was the first to establish the causes of failure in the regeneration of British oakwood on a quantitative basis, and to carry out a thorough and masterly study of the structure and development of native and subspontaneous beechwood with their related plant communities, clearly demonstrating the intricate successional processes involved and the self-regeneration of these woods. Later he made a thorough study of the climate, soils and vegetation of the Breckland including a demonstration of the processes of evolution of the Breck soil types from Chalky Boulder Clay, and a spinal research into the detailed behaviour of the bracken fern in Breck vegetation. His recent work includes studies of the native oakwood at Killarney, and of the Cairngorm arctic-alpine vegetation, He has also made important contributions to the theory of vegetation.
