| Citation | Distinguished for his work in biological chemistry. He has made important contributions to steroid chemistry; was the first to isolate Vitamin D in crystalline form (ergocalciferol); (with F.G. Young) he made the first valuable contribution to the classification of steroids by the method of molecular rotation differences. He has contributed to the isolation and assay of urinary steroids. More recently he initiated the investigation of sisal as a valuable source of hecoenin and discovered that sarmentogenin (another possible precursor of cortisone) is of geographically limited occurrence in Strophanthus sarmentosus. In the antibiotic field he has separated the antitubercular substance licheniformin into 3 cyclic polypeptides. An important contribution to nutrition was his discovery that phytic acid is responsible for the effect of cereals in diminishing absorption of calcium. |
