DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his work in organic and medicinal chemistry. He has contributed notably to the chemistry of the vitamins; in addition to his earlier work on vitamins B1 and E he has in recent years been responsible for new and ingenious syntheses of riboflavin and pyridoxin. During his twelve years as Direcotr of Research for Roche Products Ltd., he built up and directed a flourishing research group, and devoted much of his attention to the chemistry of synthetic drugs and to the relationship between chemical constitution and pharmacological action. In this field he has made substantial contributions to our knowledge of synthetic analgesics and of neurotropic and musculotropic stimulators and inhibitors. He has in recent years directed his attention with success to the study of cytotoxic agents and of enzyme systems important in the investigation of abnormal growth.
