Title | Kendrew, Sir John Cowdery: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Kendrew's field of research has been the investigation of the structure of protein molecules by X-ray analysis, and he has played a large part in the development of the Medical Research Council's Unit at Cambridge which has added so much to our knowledge of biological molecules. He has recently achieved the three-dimensional analysis of myoglobin, the first protein structure to be determined by direct X-ray methods and far more complex than any molecular hitherto analysed. Great difficulties were encountered at each stage, in purifying and crystallising the protein, finding a favourable crystalline form, and preparing a series of isomorphous crystalline heavy atom derivatives. He has also done pioneer work in using electronic computing machines for crystallographic computations. During the war he was Officer-in-Charge, Operational Research Section, and Scientific Adviser to the Allied Air Commander-in Chief, South East Asia (Honorary Wing Commander). |
