Title | Willmer, Edward Nevill: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his work in cytology, tissue culture and the physiology of vision. His rediscovery of the dichromatic nature of foveal vision formed the basis of the modern investigation on this. He has made fundamental studies on the physiology of growth in tissue culture and has advanced our knowledge in several fields of cytology; notably, with Keys, he discovered the chloride secreting cells in the gills of eels and certain fish and clarified their function and action. His work on factors affecting the metamorphosis of ciliated to amoeboid cells is helping to clarify the control of growth and metamorphosis of cells. His work has been published in 44 papers and 2 books. |
