Title | Deer, William Alexander: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for researches in petrology and mineralogy, especially from the chemical standpoint. His early work at Cairsphairn and later at Glen Tilt demonstrated the importance of hybridisation in such Caledonian igneous complexes. These studies were accomplished by much new chemical data on the paragenesis of the micas and amphiboles of the rock units of these complexes. Deer was part author (with L.R. Wager) of the memoir on the Skaergaard gabbro intrusion of E. Greenland (1939) which still remains the most detailed study of a layered intrusion yet made. He contributed particularly to the chemical study of the minerals and rocks which resulted in a new evaluation of the trend of clinopyroxene crystallisation in relation to orthopyroxene and olivine. He was equally concerned with his co author in the petrological generalisations presented in this memoir which ranks as a major contribution to petrogenesis. A list of publications is appended. |
