Title | Raphael, Ralph Alexander: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his studies on acetylenic compounds with particular reference to their stereospecific application to the synthesis of natural products of widely diverse types. He was the first to synthesise linoleic acid and the branched-chain sugars apiose and cordycepose. Other work in the carbohydrate field has included stereoselecteive suntheses of polyydric alcohols and new routes to 2-deoxyribose and erythrulose. In the heterocyclic field he was responsible for the first synthesis of penicillinic acid, the amino-acid baikiain and bullatenone; new synthetic routs have been established to histamine and a number of alkaloids (e.g. tropinone, pseudopelletierine, lobelanine). He took a leading part in the synthesis of tropolone and its natural homologues the thujaplicins, and new routes to seven-membered carbocyclic structures have been established. Recent work on macrocyclic acetylenic compounds has led to a new synthesis of the natural perfume consituent exaltolide and to a number of novel ring systems of fundamental theoretical interest. |
