TitleRuncorn, Stanley Keith: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his experimental and theoretical researches on the magnetic field of the earth. In a paper published in 1951 he showed that the earth's field increases downwards in mines in a way that indicated that the origin of the field could not be uniformly distributed through the body of the earth; he showed that these experiments, and also the distribution of the secular variation, were consistent with an origin in the earth's core. He has investigated the magnetisation of rocks in England, the U.S.A. and elsewhere and has found many places where the magnetisation is in a direction different from that of the present earth's field. The vigorous attack on the problems of palaeo agnetism by Runcorn and those working with him has done much to revive interest in the subject.
