TitleHutchison, Sir William Kenneth: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationAfter research into the kinetics of gas reactions he joined the Gas Industry, where he has occupied a number of posts of technological importance. These gave scope to his skill as an investigator and his ability to translate experimental results into full scale plant. Examples of this are his process for the removal of sulphur from gas and his investigation of the design and efficiency of cooling towers, both of which were awarded medals by the Institutions concerned.
During the War he was Director of Hydrogen Production at the Air Ministry. In 1949 he became Chairman of the S.E. Gas Board where, under his leadership a number of important developments took place, including pioneer work on producing gas from oil products. (see detailed statement with publications).
He is now Deputy Chairman of the Gas Council, with special responsibility for its research organisation. He has played a leading part in the recent developments in the Gas Industry, thanks to his imaginative approach, his scientific judgment, and his ability as a chemical engineer. He has been President of both the Institutions of Chemical and Gas Engineers.
A list of publications is attached, and a statement of his contributions to gas technology.
