Title | Kassanis, Basil: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his many and varied contributions to knowledge about plant viruses and virus diseases. He discovered intranuclear inclusion bodies in virus-infected plants and recently made the major discovery that the multiplication of one virus may depend on the simultaneous multiplication of another. His studies of transmission by aphids, of the action of virus inhibitors, and of the ways changing environment affects the susceptibility of plants to infection and virus multiplication, are all notable for both their scientific interest and practical applications. He showed the great potentialities of heat therapy, now common practice in horticulture, and his critical study of paracrinkle virus not only changed ideas about its origin, but culminated in him producing a virus-free clone of the important potato variety King Edward that yields more than those currently grown. |
