| Citation | MOURANT, Arthur Ernest (London). M.A., D.Phil., D.M. (Oxford), F.R.C.P. (London). Physician, Director of the Blood Group Reference Laboratory, Lister Institute. In 1944, discovered the predicted antibody anti-e thus helping to establishe the three-factor theory of the Rheses system; discovered the Lewis factor and shared in the discovery of the Kell factor, and of a number of antigens in other systems, and in the working out of the antiglobulin test.
With his colleagues has made almost the largest and theoretically the most significant contribution to ascertainment of human blood group distribution and has been foremost in its interpretation which is embodied in his books The Distribution of the Human Blood Groups (1954) and (jointly) The ABO Blood Groups and Maps of World Distribution (1958) which represent a major step in the elucidation of questions of race in Man.
The Nuffield Blood Centre works under his direction to collect and systematize population data from the whole world and in great detail from the United Kingdom for blood groups and other genetical characters for which figures are available. Is widely recognized as one of the most active and valuable leaders in the field of blood group research. A list of 104 papers is attached. |
