Title | Schild, Heinz Otto: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for many contributions to pharmacology and physiology. He proved that histamine is released in isolated tissues in anaphylaxis and in human allergy, but that anaphylaxis still causes a contraction in muscle desensitised to histamine. Showed that analphylactic histamine release, unlike the release by drugs, is sensitive to heat, calcium lack and metabolic inhibitors. Improved the accuracy of assays on plain muscle by introducing the use of statistics and automatic apparatus. Introduced new methods of testing drugs on gastric secretion and isolated human bronchi. Has done fundamental work on drug antagonism and the responses of depolarized plain muscle to drugs. |
