Citation | Sir Frederick White's original interest was in physics and later especially in radio physics. His publications prior to 1939 give an indication of this activity. He found his real outlet when he was called to assist in the development of radar in the Pacific during the war. His ability was recognised by his being made Chief of the CSIR Division of Radio physics in 1942. His excellent work led to his appointment to the executive committee of CSIRO in 1946. He was made Chief Executive Officer in 1949, deputy Chairman in 1957 and finally chairman in 1959. His high standing as a scientific administrator has been recognised by the award of the K.B.E in 1962 and to many positions of responsibility in guiding scientific work in Australia. These include Antarctic research, university, Government and Presidency-elect of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science. |
