Title | Bunn, Charles William: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | He has carried out a variety of crystallographic studies but is best known for his work on the X-ray analysis of high polymers. He has found the atomic arrangement in a number of these materials including polythene, rubber, nylon, terylene and fluorocarbons, and has established interesting relations between their structure and physical properties. He has also contributed to our understanding of crystal growth and has made many improvements in the technique of X-ray analysis. Of particular importance was his development of the use of optical diffraction which he successfully applied to the solution by trial and error of the structure of sodium benzylpenicillin. Very recently he has revised and considerably enlarged his book, Chemical Crystallography, which now is used all over the world. |
