Title | Dent, Frederick James: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | F.J. Dent is a chemical engineer who is distinguished by a remarkable ability to carry his laboratory researches up to the scale of large pilot plant. His main interest in the last 20 years has been the gasification reactions between hydrogen and either coal or oil. He has been among the leaders in the study of the chemical combination of hydrogen with fossil fuels, and in a long series of researches on the basic chemistry of the many reactions involved he was able to elucidate the essential features sufficiently to justify the construction of large scale plant at the Gas Council's Research Station at Solihull, of which he is the Director. This has necessitated detailed studies of many catalytic and gas phase reactions. He has obtained the design data for the total gasification of coal, heavy oil, fuel oil, and light distillate, and based on his work, large scale plants are now operating in this country and on the Continent. He is currently extending his experiments to much higher pressures. His researches form the basis of the important developments now taking place in the Gas Industry. He is well-known both in America and in Germany as the foremost authority in this subject. His work has been mainly published in the Journal of the Institution of Gas Engineers. A list of plants operating his processes or designs in operation or in course of erection is attached. |
