| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the biology of intertidal animals. He has elucidated the factors which influence their spread or recession by extensive surveys of the changes in their distribution. New light has been thrown on the breeding, development, settlement, orientation and feeding of barnacles by his experimental studies. Special interest attaches to the demonstration of the secretion by parent barnacles with hatchable eggs of a 'hatching substance'. Feeding causes the release of this substance, which stimulates the embryos and results in their release. The settlement of cyprids preferentially on surfaces already bearing barnacles results in gregariousness. Treatment of clean surfaces with aqueous extracts of barnacle tissues renders them similarly attractive. It has shown to be due to the presence of a 'settling factor', probably arthropodin, found mainly in the integument. This suggests that he larvae possess a 'tactile chemical sense' which enables them to detect traces of this substance when it is bound to the rock surface. Notable for their range and versatility, these studies have advanced significantly knowledge of the factors affecting the fouling of ships and underwater structures by barnacles. He has also contributed to aspects of surface chemistry and of plastron respiration in insects.
