Title | Gell, Philip George Houthem: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Noted for his work on immunological hypersensitivity reactions, his histological studies of which greatly clarified the distinction between reactions of the immediate and delayed type. By an ingenious use of defined haptengroups attached to different antigens Gell and his colleagues produced the first clear evidence that when sensitised cells interact with an antigen the effective determinant group is more complex than the group with which the circulating anti-hapten antibodies are able to combine. This observation has had an important influence on thinking about the recognition of antigen by immunologically competent cells. Gell and his colleagues have also made fundamental contributions to the study of immunoglobulin allotypes in the rabbit, and have made pioneer observations on the elicitation of iso-antibodies against individual specific antibodies - observations which suggest that specific antibodies may be the products of unique clones of cells. |
