Title | Wiesner, Karel: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for his work first in polarography and later in the field of natural products, particularly alkaloids. He discovered kinetic polarographic currents and participated in the development of the theory of these currents for the measurement of extremely rapid reaction rates. He determined the structure of the first diterpenoid alkaloid, veatchine, and by analogy proposed the correct structure of atisine; also the structures of delphinine and aconitine (the latter jointly with G. Buchi and simultaneously with Przybylska and Marion). He established the structure of annotinine, of several other Lycopodium alkaloids, and of ryanodine, a diterpenoid insecticide. Recently he has achieved the total synthesis of veatchine. |
