Title | Coales, John Flavell: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | John F. Coales early work was concerned with the problem of radio direction-finding, with research on anomalous propagation and with the development of high frequency shipborne direction finders and of goniometers and automatic rotating coil systems. During the war he was concerned with the research and development of gunnery radar for the Navy and on communication and radar in the U.H.F. band. After the war at Elliott-Automation he started research on printed circuit package units for digital computers, made and patented the first know hydraulic shaft encoders and was responsible for work on magnetic amplifiers, hydraulic and electrical controls and digital and analogue computation, etc. At Cambridge he has contributed to the analysis, optimisation and synthesis of non-linear control systems. He is distinguished for his work on predictive control and stochastic systems. He has expanded this work to include the modelling and control of large complex systems and the use of digital and hybrid computers for this purpose. He leads a large research group working closely with industry in such applications as steam-raising boilers, chemical reactors, steel rolling mills, paper mills and aircraft flight control. |
