Title | Wild, John Paul: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to radio astronomy. He has played the leading part in the study of radio noise "bursts" from the Sun and their relation to physical processes in the solar atmosphere. With his colleagues he has been responsible for the recognition of four out of the five types of burst now recognised as physically distinct and has discovered, in addition, the presence of harmonic frequencies present in certain types. This work has been based on the development of original instrumentation, in particular the dynamic radio spectrograph and the swept-frequency interferometer. He is currently developing a new type of high resolution spectroheliograph for use at low frequencies. His early paper on theoretical aspects of the 21cm. H-line is also recognised as of great significance in the field. |
