Citation | Distinguished for his study of the phenomenon of modulation of the fluorescent light in double resonance experiments in which he demonstrated the importance in spontaneous emission of correlations between quantum states. This was followed by comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses of the interactions between electromagnetic fields and free atoms, leading to the prediction of new types of resonance phenomena, several of which have now received experimental confirmation. In his early work he studied fine structure in H and He+, and by achieving higher resolution than previous workers he succeeded in measuring Lamb shifts in a number of levels. He entered the field of optical-radiofrequency double resonance at an early stage, measuring hyperfine structures in potassium and making the first determination of the nuclear electric quadrupole moment of 39-K. |
