Citation | Distinguished for his very original work on the transport of substances across natural membranes. He was among the first to demonstrate, on red blood cells, a coupling between the transport of sodium and potassium ions; he elucidated the mechanism by which seaweeds accumulate iodine and he devised, with P.F. Baker, the first method for the perfusion of the giant axons of squid and, with A.L. Hodgkin and their colleagues, he has exploited the method with great success. T.I. Shaw was the first to show, with F. Crescetelli, that the photosensitive visual pigments are circularly dichroic and that this dichroism disappears on bleaching the pigments; he has also done very interesting work on the buoyancy of squid and of gelatinous marine animals. |
