Description | Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate. |
Citation | He is distinguished for his numerous contributions to ship hydrodynamics and the theory of water waves. He was the first to calculate the virtual-mass and damping coefficients at all frequencies for the oscillatory and rolling motions of a ship; his results, verified experimentally, form the basis for present day calculations and he has recently extended them to cover oblique waves. In oceanography his studies (with N. Barber) of waves in the North Atlantic provide the fundamental ideas used in modern ocean wave forecasting. He discovered the theoretical trapping modes which are possible on sloping beaches and around submerged cylinders, and demonstrated their existence experimentally. His investigations have led him to make many substantial contributions to the methods of applied mathematics including the solution of integral equations with rapidly oscillating kernels and uniform asymptotics in the method of steepest descents; he was the first to give a rigorous justification of the high-frequency solution of the acoustic boundary value problem. |
