(1) Recognized internationally as an authority on adenoviruses, he has made exact studies of their biological effects, structure and antigenic composition. Working with several colleagues, he has separated 3 main structural components and discovered the functions of each. (2) Has compared influenza viruses from man, horses and birds, obtained recombinants between them and uncovered cross-relationships: a matter relevant to the possible origin of pandemic strains from animal sources. (3) Was leader of the laboratory team which first cultivated a common cold virus, a result leading up to the regularly reproducible cultivation of rhinoviruses by Tyrrell. |
