TitleChristian, John Wyrill: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his outstanding contributions in the fields of martensitic transformations and low temperature plasticity of body centred cubic metals. His experimental and theoretical researches on the transformation of cobalt and indium-thallium alloys represented important advances, and these and other contributions have established him as one of the leading authorities in this field. His recent book on "The Theory of Transformations in Metals and Alloys" is masterly and is the generally accepted authoritative treatment of this subject. In the field of plasticity Christian, together with Basinski, pioneered the study of the mechanical properties of body centred cubic metals and alloys at very low temperatures, with a view to elucidating the importance of lattice friction effects. Since then he has led in this field and his work on the stress dependence of the activation energy controlling the flow stress in a number of body centred cubic metals of high purity is outstanding.
