Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to nuclear theory. He made the earliest detailed theoretical studies of polarization phenomena in nuclear reactions and first drew attention to the importance of small configuration admixtures for the magnetic and electric quadrupole moments of nuclei. Through a systematic study of beta-decay rates and of weak parity violating effects in nuclear properties he has provided important tools for exploiting nuclear data for gaining information on the fundamental nature of weak interactions in particular the role of the conserved vector and partially conserved axial vector currents and the nature of the delta S=O hadronic weak interaction. He has made major contributions to our theoretical understanding of the isospin purity of nuclear states and has made the most detailed quantitative analyses of the charge dependence of the nuclear force proper. |
