TitleCadogan, Sir John Ivan George: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1969
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHas made outstanding contributions in the discovery and elucidation of new reactions in the fields of organophosphorous compounds and of free radicals and other reactive intermediates in solution. His work has led to a fuller understanding of the reactions of quinquevalent and tervalent phosphorous compounds from which he developed new reactions for the production of a wide variety of heterocyclic compounds by reduction of nitro-compounds by triethyl phosphite. In free radical chemistry his work has embraced a comprehensive investigation of the addition of radicals to olefins, leading to the development of a simple on-step alpha-alkylation of acetic acid and its derivatives, and a rationalisation of the reactions of acylarylnitrosamines in terms of radicals, arynes and other reactive species.
