| Citation | Dr. J.D. Smith is distinguished for contributions to the biochemistry of nucleic acids and in particular, for his work on transfer RNA. His initial work was on the biochemistry of nucleic acids of microorganisms; he helped to develop methods of analysis and contributed to the characterization of chemical and enzymatic degradation products of RNA (with Markham). He studied the incorporation of base analogues into nucleic acids and was responsible for the discovery of a new base, 6-methylaminopurine, in DNA. His most important work has been on the characterization of the tyrosine transfer RNA which is responsible for suppression of nonsense mutants in Escherichia coli. He proved that suppression is due to change in the anticodon and his studies on mutants of the RNA have thrown much light on its structure and biosynthesis. |
