Title | Rooke, Sir Denis Eric: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1976 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his unique contribution to the technological progress which has revitalised British Gas. In 1957 Rooke joined an international team of engineers and scientists planning to transport liquified natural gas in bulk in ocean going vessels, and was a leading member of the small group detailed to sail on the "Methane Pioneer", and to be responsible for the safety of this first ever commercial operation. He joined the Gas Council's headquarters as Development Engineer and was appointed to the Board as Member responsible for Production in 1966, and advanced to Deputy Chairman in 1972, and is now Chairman. He gives general oversight to the planning and carrying out of the industry's research programme, and has been responsible at Council level for the creation of all the facilities needed to design, build and operate the new high pressure gas transmission system which serves the whole country. He has shown innovative ability of a very high order in the use of rigorous methods of testing, and in the introduction of the sophisticated controls required to respond to the varying demand of the community. Rooke is an active member of several international consortia exploring for and producing oil and gas in the North Sea, and under his leadership British Gas has now demonstrated a capability to operate successfully on its own account. Chairman designate Council for National Academic Awards. |
