Title | Talling, John Francis: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1973 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished as a limnologist. His studies of the interrelations of phytoplankton photosynthesis, growth and environmental factors are outstanding for their meticulous technique and insight. His analysis of the relation of photosynthetic rate to light in aquatic habitats has been used as a basis for the most successful models developed by other workers. He has been the first to make extended systematic observations on African fresh-waters and his comparative treatment of his results is a major contribution to tropical limnology. The success of the Royal Society/ International Biological Programme project on Lake George, Uganda, is in large part attributable to his planning of the scientific work and training of staff. |
