Distinguished for his numerous contributions over the entire range of theoretical astronomy with special emphasis on cosmological problems and problems involving transport of high energy radiation. Rees' papers are considered classics in areas as diverse as processes in which Compton scattering is decisive, chaotic cosmological models, accretion discs around stars as X-ray sources, mechanics for pulsar radiation, and relativistic expansions of quasars and extra-galactic radio sources. Besides Rees' own contributions in published papers (there are over 200 of them), his influence on his colleagues in Europe and North America has been profound: many of his suggestions have found fruition in the work of others. Rees is clearly the outstanding theoretical astrophysicist of his generation in England. |
