Title | Zienkiewicz, Olgierd Cecil: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1977 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his extensive scientific contributions which range over the field of solid and fluid mechanics in the context of engineering. His 170 scientific papers include major contributions to the stress analysis of dams, bridges, nuclear reactors etc, and to lubrication theory and the development of the finite element method where he was the first to realize its application to problems outside structural mechanics. He has made significant contributions to the procedures of the finite element method ranging from the establishment of several fundamental element forms to the basic formulation of plasticity and flow problems. His books (now translated into six languages) on the subject have provided the first comprehensive treatment and although followed by others are still the basic reference text on this widely used mathematical and engineering process. |
