Title | Gass, Ian Graham: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1976 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his pioneer recognition that the Troodos Complex of Cyprus is an upthrust slab of oceanic crust, for his subsequent collaborative magnetic seismic, metamorphic and structural studies of the Troodos Complex and more recently of the similar Oman Semail ophiolite complex. He had made important contributions to Recent mid-plate volcanism following expeditions to Tristan da Cunha, South Arabia, Red Sea, Ethiopia. With Briden he correlated igneous activity in Africa with variations in African plate motion. He has radically advanced Earth Science education through work at the Open University while organising a strong research group on magma genesis there. |
