He named and has characterized the ATPase proteins, dyein 1 and dyein 2 and other constituents of the flagellum. By an elegant combination of biochemical and electromicroscopical techniques he has greatly advanced our understanding of motility of those organelles, particularly by the direct demonstration of the sliding of microtubules in partially digested flagella. |
