Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr J D Lawson is distinguished for his contribution to the field of applied electromagnetism. HE worked on the design of the first U K electron synchrotron (at RRE Great Malvern ), he was designer and project leader of the first variable energy cyclotron, accelerating medium heavy ions (brought into operation at Harwell in 1965); he led the team which developed the 1kW c w X-band Klystron in the 1950's: He has made an especial contribution to the physics of charged particle beams: his many years of original work, which has included the Alfven-Lawson criterion for the propagation of high current beams, has recently been brought together in his book "The Physics of Charged Particle Beams". His best known analysis is that of the conditions required for an energy-producing thermonuclear reactor: Known world-wide as the Lawson Criterion, it is the simplest and clearest original statement of the high temperature containment requirement for thermonuclear reactors. |
