CitationDistinguished for his contributions to techniques of linear analysis and their application to the theory of elasticity. Sneddon has been a pioneer in the development of a range of powerful analytical tools which are now very widely used in the linear theory of elasticity and in other branches of mathematical physics. In the 1940's he was the first to appreciate the potentialities of integral transform, dual integral equation and allied methods in the solution of mixed boundary-value problems, and his calculation of the stress field due to a penny-shaped crack was the precursor of extensive developments in the mathematical theory in the mathematical theory of brittle fracture. Sneddon has made many further contributions to this subject and he has also carried out distinguished work in several other areas of solid mechanics, notably elastodynamics and the theory of thermal stress. His published work includes over 90 research papers and 13 books.
