Date | 1981 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished through unique experimental researches on combustion and on optical and electrical properties of flames; author of many leading publications including books on "Optics of Flames" (1963) and (with J Lawton) on "Electrical Aspects of Combustion" (1969). Founder chairman of the 'Combustion Physics' Group of the Institute of Physics and programme organiser for the first European Symposium on Combustion (1973). Silver Medallist (1972), Plenary Lecturer (1974) and Gold Medallist (1980) of the Combustion Institute. Has done much outstanding scientific work developing new optical laser, interferometric, holographic and anemometric studies of fundamental combustion processes. These contributions to the basic science are also having impact on engineering designs of combustion chambers; thus ignition by the injection of radicals from small plasma jets permits rapid pollution-free energy release from very lean fuel mixtures, hitherto regarded as non-flammable. His researches on the radiation front from very large flames are of major importance for dealing with hazards from large scale disasters. |
