Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the development of more powerful approaches to the precise structure analysis of fibrous polymers, and especially the application to nucleic acids and polysaccharides. From a classification of the different types and levels of order and disorder in fibrous systems, he has shown how the corresponding characteristic types of diffraction pattern can provide the basis for structure analysis. He has developed the linked atom least squares method to supplement sparse diffraction data with non-controversial stereochemical information, and this technology is now very widely used by others in the field. These approaches have been deployed very effectively by him, first to consolidate early DNA and RNA structures, then to define details of many new allomorphs of DNA, RNA and of a variety of polysaccharides especially the glycoaminoglycans of vertebrate connective tissues. Thereby he has carried fibre diffraction analysis to an unprecedented level of precision and, for example, visualized how cations can transform polymorphic polysaccharide structures and how polynucleotide sequences present themselves in diverse ways to interact in proteins and drugs. |
