Date | 1982 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work in the fields of optical n.m.r., and especially e.s.r. spectroscopy of solids and liquids with particular reference to unstable chemical intermediates and solvation spectra. He has detected and characterized by e.s.r. a very large variety of novel organic and inorganic radicals formed by photolysis or radiolysis. His notable achievements in the solid state include his provision of the accepted explanation for the e.s.r. spectra of photolytically generated radicals in solids, his discovery of triplet state centres formed by pair-wise trapping of radicals, his characterization of heteroatom containing dimeric radical cations, and his proof that radiation damage to organic halides involves the initial formation of a sigma* radical anion of the halide. In his work in the liquid state he has successfully separated solvent n.m.r. shifts into cationic and anionic contributions while his ultrasonic studies provided valuable support for the "clathrate cage" model of solvation. His work is characterized by the speed and skill with which he has mastered and applied a wide range of spectroscopic techniques to current chemical problems. |
