Title | Laver, William Graeme: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1986 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for research on the glycoproteins of influenza viruses. He was the first to purify these molecules separately from the virus membrane using biochemical procedures and subsequently studied their chemical and antigenic properties. With colleagues he identified the haemagglutinin as the antigen which binds neutralising antibodies and provided convincing chemical evidence for the mechanisms of its antigenic variation. More recently his work has concentrated on the neuraminidase glycoprotein and in collaborative projects has led to its crystallization, the solution of its structure to 2.9A resolution and to analyses of neuraminidase-monoclonal antibody complexes. |
