| Citation | Distinguished for his studies on the structure and function of nucleic acids, especially in the plants virus and viroid field. He developed methods for the preparation of 32P-labelled nucleotides of high specific activity. These methods have been widely used and most recent work on nucleic acids has depended on them. He has developed techniques for investigating plant viruses and has studied cucumber mosaic virus in detail. It is composed of three different RNAs which contain a 7-methyl-guanosine cap. He has determined much of the nucleotide sequence of the viral RNA and has characterised its in vitro translation products. He has recently characterised and sequenced a number of viroids and virusoids. His careful work on the fundamental aspects of viruses and viroids has been the basis of important applications in the agricultural field. |
