| Citation | Distinguished for many significant contributions to applied analysis, particularly to the theory of partial differential equations with applications to practical problems. He has decisively illuminated various problems in fluid dynamics by means of rigorous mathematical treatments, notably von Karman's problem of a rotating viscous liquid, problems in boundary-layer theory and the classic problem of steady water waves of extreme form. Over the last decade he has also done important work on difficult aspects of bifurcation theory and on nonlinear diffusion equations. By the exemplary precision and power of his publications and his lectures, he has become internationally recognized as the leading British authority on the useful applications of functional analysis. Since moving to Pittsburgh in 1988, he maintains close links with Oxford and spends five months of each year here. |
