Citation | Distinguished for his work on the molecular mechanisms that drive cell patterning during embryonic development, in both Drosophila and vertebrates. His studies of basic?Helix?Loop?Helix (bHLH) repressors have shown the importance of transcriptional repression in the regulation of early developmental processes, including sex?determination, segmentation and neurogenesis. He has shown how bHLH and other repressors, particularly Groucho, act together in vivo. His work on bHLH proteins has led to the first molecular insights into the mechanism of segmentation in vertebrates, and to identification of the signalling mechanism for regulating and sustaining neural stem cell numbers during vertebrate neurogenesis. |
