Title | Jackson, Richard James: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Richard Jackson is distinguished for his contributions to understanding the mechanism and regulation of initiation of eukaryotic messenger RNA translation. He co-discovered the regulation of translation initiation via phosphorylation of translation initiation factor protein eIF2. He developed in vitro translation systems that have become the standard methods in the field. More recently, he has received international recognition for elucidating the mechanism of selection of the correct initiation site on eukaryotic mRNAs. In particular, he has characterised the special RNA structures, called the internal ribosome entry sites, which are found in mammalian viral RNAs that use variants of the basic mechanism. |
