Citation | Morgan Sheng is an internationally recognized neurobiologist who has contributed greatly to a molecular understanding of synaptic ion-channel complexes. A seminal discovery was the binding of the adapter protein PSD-95 to the Shaker-type K channel. This observation provided the first functional evidence for PDZ domains as modular interaction domains that bind to specific C-terminal motifs. He was also amongst the first to show that AMPA-type glutamate receptors undergo dynamic redistribution between the membrane and intracellular compartments. He later defined rules that determine which AMPA receptor subunits influence surface delivery and sorting of channel complexes toward recycling or degradation pathways. |
