In a series of seminal contributions on contact and impact, plates and shells, structural dynamics, incompressible materials response, large-deformation constitutive equations and computational fluid dynamics, he has pioneered computational methodologies that are widely employed throughout the computational mechanics community. Hughes is among the most highly cited authors in scientific computing and his outstanding contributions to science and society have been recognised by many awards and medals from institutions including ASCE, ASME, USACM, IACM, as well as Honorary Doctorates from several leading international universities.
