TitleBurgess, Neil: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date4 May 2017
DescriptionCertificate of candidate for election
CitationNeil Burgess is an internationally-recognised expert on the neural basis of memory. His work combines systems neuroscience, behavioural and neuropsychological studies with computational theory. His computational models allow physiological observations of neuronal assemblies to be related to behavioural expression of memory and its pathologies. Important experimental advances include work on hippocampal place cells, including the importance of attractor dynamics and theta rhythm oscillations in their construction, pioneering application of virtual-reality to human neuroimaging studies, and sensitive new behavioural tests for neurological patients. These latter studies have convincingly demonstrated a role for the human hippocampus in accurate navigation and episodic memory.
