TitleGross, Mark: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date4 May 2017
DescriptionCertificate of candidate for election
CitationMark Gross has changed our understanding of the mysterious phenomenon of "mirror symmetry" in mathematics. A prediction coming from string theory in physics, mirror symmetry has baffled mathematicians for 25 years, making profound mathematical predictions that we have often been able to check without really knowing the underlying reason that they are true. Together with his collaborator Bernd Siebert, Mark has changed all this by giving a mathematical construction of mirror symmetry. Along the way they have heavily influenced various fields of mathematics such as tropical geometry, representation theory and enumerative geometry, and shared the 2016 Clay Research Award.
