TitleGrubbs, Robert Howard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date4 May 2017
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to the Foreign Membership
CitationBob Grubbs has made seminal changes in the development of organic synthesis. He has had a lifelong commitment to the chemistry of alkene metathesis (the breaking and controlled reassembly of carbon-carbon double bonds) and moving this remarkable scientific novelty into the mainstream of research. His approach has culminated in a general and easily applied method using his designed ruthenium complex catalysts that transforms the ease of application. This provides one of the cornerstones of modern synthesis, now applied to many diverse targets and utilised across the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. His many awards include the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
