TitleSmith, Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date4 May 2017
DescriptionCertificate of candidate for election
CitationProfessor Smith is a world-leading expert on greenhouse gas emissions from managed land. Through experimentation and modelling, his work redefined the likely response of soils to climate change, and provided the first quantitative global estimate of how agriculture and land use can contribute to climate change mitigation. His research has been instrumental in setting international climate change goals for agriculture and measuring progress, and at the practical level, through development of the Cool Farm Tool, has enabled thousands of farmers globally to quantify and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. PepsiCo reduced its UK emissions by 38%), providing tangible societal benefits.
